Abstract

|
After the first case of acute promyelocytic leukemia by Croizat and Favre-Gilly in 1949, Hillestad proposed acute promyelocytic leukemia as a clinical entity in 1957. The most outstanding, clinical features are its rapid downhill course, and hemorrhagic manifestations including soft tissue swelling hematuria, hematemesis, melena etc. Also hypofibrinogenemia and abnormalities of coagulation factors are present. No definitive case of acute promyelocytic leukemia with disseminated intravascular coagulation was reported in this country.
Recently we had the opportunity to observe a patient whose clinical courses and laboratory findings were consistent with acute promyelocytic leukemia accompanied by disseminated intravascular coagulation. He was a 45 year old Korean male, who was admitted to Seoul National University hospital because of fever and painful, purplish swelling on right forearm. He was also treated with heparin with clinical improvement of his bleeding abnormalities.
